Geocache Description:

Cache is a camouflaged micro container with log only. Cache is available year round and a short walk from the paved road.

One in a series of 13 caches I call the “Marathon Half-Marathon”. The coordinates will take you to a structure that I'm sure had a purpose at one time. The short walk from the road is in knee high briars and poison ivy is fairly prevalent in the area. Precautions should be taken if making the walk.

Marathon Lake Recreation Area is a camping and daytime recreation area located on the Bienville National Forest. Marathon Lake is a 50-acre lake located in Smith County, which got its name from being the site of the Marathon Lumber Company which closed in 1929. It is normally open from the first week in March to mid-December each year, and the hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day. It is a fee area, $5.00 per vehicle for day use and $20.00 per night for camping. Facilities available: 34 camping sites w/water & electricity (no sewer hook-up) – 14 picnic tables – barbecue grills – easily accessible dump station – 2 group pavilions – swimming beach – boat launch – 1.7 mile hiking trail – sanitary facilities w/flush toilets – campground bath house w/warm showers. Accessible for persons with disabilities. Campground regulations are posted at the fee station. Fishing is allowed, boat and bank, state requirements and limits apply, no wake allowed when using motors. Come spend the day or camp for several. Fairly remote, family friendly, quite area, with limited to no cell phone service. Some providers, C-Spire and Go-Phones, I believe have limited service. GPS unit and pocket query might not be a bad idea.
