Geocache Description:

Easy park & grab

So I always try to combine my love of trains with geocaching, so here's one for you. The rail yard on the north side of the road originally belonged to the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railroad. It was purchased by the Santa Fe in 1928 and everyone still referred to it as the Orient, hence the name of the street. Below is some history on the yard from Steven Priest's book Santa Fe Waycars.

"The shops at West Wichita trace their origin to the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railroad. This railroad was chartered to build from Kansas City to the Pacific via the shortest geographic route. This route took the line southwest from Kansas City, Kansas to Emporia, Kansas then southwest to Wichita, Kansas, and then south through Oklahoma, Texas and then to Mexico. After crossing Mexico, the railroad finally would reach the Pacific Ocean. Most of the railroad east of Wichita was never built, but the line southwest out of Wichita, Kansas across Oklahoma into Texas was operational for many years before being purchased by the Santa Fe in 1928. The ATSF ceased locomotive rebuilding at the West Wichita shops and concentrated on utilizing them as car shops. Many classes of reefers, boxcars, flatcars, and of course, waycars were stripped, sand-blasted and then rebuilt. The shops were located west of Seneca Avenue and paralleled by Orient Boulevard. The shops were torn down in the early 1970s in order to re-develop the land as an industrial park. Today there is little left of the shops, although the Central Kansas Railroad erected their locomotive facility in the area."

I love to drive down Orient and take pictures of neat stuff sitting there. You will not have to trespass on the railroad to find this cache. But beware, it may seem peaceful, but as soon as you stop you are libel to have cars appear from nowhere. Which is why I decided to name this cache what I did. Oh, and if you see a red Jeep driving slow and stopping for no reason, it's probably just me photographing trains.

***Congrats to Team BSCCT for the FTF***
