Geocache Description:

This is the first of what will eventually be a series of geocaches at Ambathala Station.

This cache is located nearby the Ambathala cricket pitch sign.  Just off the main road from here you will find the historical Ambathala cricket pitch.

This cache is located nearby the Ambathala cricket pitch sign.  If you take this turn to the left off the main road you will eventually arrive at a gate.  Go through the gate and approximately 100m to your left you will find one of the oldest concrete cricket pitches in Australia.  When my grandfather 'Billy Marks' was still alive he held an annual cricket match here each boxing day, 26th December.  The teams were made up on the day and were devided as such:  those living to the East of the Langlo River (Townies) against those living to the West of the Langlo River (Bushies).

The temperature on the cricket pitch and surounding clay pan is usualy in excess of 40 degrees celcius in December, so the games were kept to 25 overs a side and were usualy finished by 2pm.  After the cricket was done and copious amounts of the amber fluid drunk.  Everyone would retreat a few minutes drive up the road to the 'Big Hole'.  The Big Hole being a famous swimming hole located on the deepest stretch of Ambathala creek.

As a kid I remember going to the cricket match every year up until the year my grandfather died.  Since Billy's death in the 80s there have been a few cricket matches held here in his memory but due to the incredible heat here on boxing day it is no longer an annual event.  This may change in the future as interest in the event is re-kindled.

Over time I will add some historical photos and video from these great cricket matches.  Please continue to watch this cache.
