Redcliffe seems to be a forgotten part of the world when it comes to geocaches. They do exist, but there are far too few, and the Peninsula has many locations worthy of a hide. And one of them is this place: the Redcliffe Botanic Gardens. Gates are open 6am to 6pm, and after passing it by so many times, I took a look a couple of weeks ago. Let me assure you, it is well worth checking out. Entry is free, and you will experience a man-made rainforest inhabited, for better or for worse, by masses of flying foxes, as well as Wallum heathland and various species of bush tucker plants. The cache is hidden outside the gardens; if you decide to attempt it at night it should still be an easy grab. The grey nuts lying around GZ are Candle Nuts (Aleurites moluccana) and are mildly toxic unless roasted. The name comes from their use as candles by people in the South Pacific (and apparently early pioneers here) due to the high oil content. Up in Far North Queensland there is a native species (Aleurites rockinghamensis), which has more toxins in it, but is eaten by native white-tailed rats who gnaw perfectly round holes in the shell and turn the nuts into very good emergency whistles.
