Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Berks Explorers Seeking Tupperware (aka BEST) Geo-Art series. This series was created to teach Geocacher's about Berks County, and some of it's interesting facts, places, people and heritage. Once all 55 caches are found, your Geo-Art reward will be completed. Although all caches are hidden near the Lake Ontelaunee Reservoir, it is not at these posted coordinates - no swimming is required to obtain any cache in this series *smile*

BEST Geo-Art: S04/36

Shartlesville, Upper Bern Township, Berks County, PA

The Northkill Amish Settlement was established in 1740 in Berks County. As the first identifiable Amish community in the new world, it was the foundation of Amish settlement in the Americas. The first Amish began migrating to the United States in the 18th century, largely to avoid religious persecution and compulsory military service. The Northkill Creek watershed, in eastern Province of Pennsylvania, was opened for settlement in 1736 and that year Melchior Detweiler and Hans Seiber settled near Northkill. Shortly thereafter many Amish began to move to Northkill with large groups settling in 1742 and 1749.

The Northkill settlement was located on the edge of Pennsylvania's frontier, along the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains, near a gap that led directly into the lands of the Lenape. At first the Amish had friendly relations with the Lenape on the other side of the mountains, but when the French and Indian War turned the Pennsylvania frontier into a killing zone, the settlement became a victim of the war. Because the Amish were pacifists, they practiced non-resistance when a group of Lenape and Shawnee warriors attacked the Northkill homestead of Jacob Hochstetler in 1757, killing his wife and two children.

What was the date when the Northkill settlement was disbanded?

A. September 29, 1757 (N 40° 29.353 W 075° 53.844)
B. September 29, 1758 (N 40° 29.353 W 075° 53.855)
C. September 29, 1759 (N 40° 29.353 W 075° 53.833)
D. September 29, 1760 (N 40° 29.345 W 075° 53.844)

Note: A historical marker was placed on May 15, 1947 at N 40 30.724, W 76 07.189 commemorating this settlement.

Note:  This cache has the hunting attribute selected. Hunters wear orange, and when the time is right, and so should you. During hunting season, it is best to do this series on a Sunday. The majority of the cache containers are hidden within 10 - 20 feet from the trail. Since these caches are hidden in the woods, you will encounter things like wildlife, poison ivy, bugs, ticks, etc. That is just part of geocaching in the great outdoors. Good Luck.

Please note that GC4GQMT - Cache Quest #10: The Final Quest and GC45V8Q - Cache Quest #9 A Questers Pilgrimage were archived to make room for this BEST Geo-Art geocache.  Thanks Rentell.
