Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Berks Explorers Seeking Tupperware (aka BEST) Geo-Art series. This series was created to teach Geocacher's about Berks County, and some of it's interesting facts, places, people and heritage. Once all 55 caches are found, your Geo-Art reward will be completed. Although all caches are hidden near the Lake Ontelaunee Reservoir, it is not at these posted coordinates - no swimming is required to obtain any cache in this series *smile*

BEST Geo-Art: E10/27

Rockland Township, Berks County, PA

Sally Ann Furnace Complex is a historic iron furnace complex site located at Rockland Township, Berks County. It includes the remains of furnace, barns, stable, storage sheds, grist mill, and bake ovens. The furnace was built in 1791 along Sacony Creek and once stood 32 feet high.

The Sally-Ann furnace was erected, it is supposed, by Valentine Eckert, an iron-master, about 1791. This supposition is, however, doubtful, if not erroneous. Previous to 1811 Abraham Biever, a farmer, owned the tract of 94 acres upon which the furnace stands. In the year named he sold this tract to Nicholas Hunter, an iron-master. There was no furnace then. It is, therefore, probable that Mr. Hunter erected this furnace soon after the purchase of the land. Subsequently he transferred the furnace and lands to his son Jacob V. R. Hunter; whose estate still holds it. Active operations were discontinued about 1869. It was leased in 1879, but work was carried on for only a year.

In what year was the furnace changed from water to steam power…

A. 1825 (N 40° 28.641 W 075° 54.919)
B. 1861 (N 40° 28.629 W 075° 54.903)
C. 1869 (N 40° 28.643 W 075° 54.909)
D. 1879 (N 40° 28.635 W 075° 54.911)

Note: The Sally Ann Furnace Complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It is located at N 40° 28.268 W 075° 43.433

Note:  This cache has the hunting attribute selected. Hunters wear orange, and when the time is right, and so should you. During hunting season, it is best to do this series on a Sunday. The majority of the cache containers are hidden within 10 - 20 feet from the trail. Since these caches are hidden in the woods, you will encounter things like wildlife, poison ivy, bugs, ticks, etc. That is just part of geocaching in the great outdoors. Good Luck.
