Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Berks Explorers Seeking Tupperware (aka BEST) Geo-Art series. This series was created to teach Geocacher's about Berks County, and some of it's interesting facts, places, people and heritage. Once all 55 caches are found, your Geo-Art reward will be completed. Although all caches are hidden near the Lake Ontelaunee Reservoir, it is not at these posted coordinates - no swimming is required to obtain any cache in this series *smile*

BEST Geo-Art: B05/05

Albany Township, Berks County, PA

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary located in the Blue Mountain range of Northern Berks County is a wild bird sanctuary that is a prime location for the viewing of kettling and migrating raptors. An average of 20,000 hawks, eagles and falcons pass by the lookouts during the late summer and fall every year.

Before the Sanctuary was established, the area was a popular site for shooting hawks, either for sport or to prevent depredations on domestic fowl or game birds. In 1934, Rosalie Edge leased 1,400 acres of property on Hawk Mountain and hired wardens to keep the hunters away. Almost immediately, there was a noticeable recovery in the raptor population.

As the world's oldest wildlife sanctuary exclusively committed to the protection and observation of birds of prey, Hawk Mountain holds a unique place in geographic and scientific history. It is not owned or financially supported by the state; it remains entirely self-sufficient.

Who was the famous visitor to the Sanctuary that had their name inscribed on a memorial bench at the South Lookout?

A. John Denver (N 40° 28.158 W 075° 55.668)
B. Rachel Carson (N 40° 28.158 W 075° 55.679)
C. John James Audubon (N 40° 28.158 W 075° 55.657)
D. Alexander Wilson (N 40° 28.150 W 075° 55.668 )

Note: The Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is located at N 40 38.450, W 75 59.533

Note:  This cache has the hunting attribute selected. Hunters wear orange, and when the time is right, and so should you. During hunting season, it is best to do this series on a Sunday. The majority of the cache containers are hidden within 10 - 20 feet from the trail. Since these caches are hidden in the woods, you will encounter things like wildlife, poison ivy, bugs, ticks, etc. That is just part of geocaching in the great outdoors. Good Luck.
