Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Berks Explorers Seeking Tupperware (aka BEST) Geo-Art series. This series was created to teach Geocacher's about Berks County, and some of it's interesting facts, places, people and heritage. Once all 55 caches are found, your Geo-Art reward will be completed. Although all caches are hidden near the Lake Ontelaunee Reservoir, it is not at these posted coordinates - no swimming is required to obtain any cache in this series *smile*

BEST Geo-Art: B16/16

Douglassville, Amity Township, Berks County, PA

Morlatton Village represents pieces of an early Swedish Settlement begun in the early 1700’s, when Berks County was still the frontier. During colonial times, the area became a center of commerce for the region as a routing center for refined iron from Pennsylvania’s earliest furnaces and for grains from the Oley Valley heading down river to Philadelphia. Morlatton’s importance grew as roads leading to Tulpehocken, Oley, Reading, and Philadelphia all intersected at its footsteps. Morlatton Village can be viewed as where Berks County began and also its gateway.

One of the historic buildings in Morlatton Villiage is the Old Swede's House. It was built in 1716, and is a 2 1/2-story, three bay, stone dwelling. It measures 24 ft by 30 ft and features a brick chimney for a large, 9 ft kitchen fireplace. It is the oldest surviving house in Berks County.

Old Swede's House is also known as the...

A. White Horse Inn (N 40° 27.041 W 075° 55.193)
B. Mouns Jones House (N 40° 27.047 W 075° 55.185)
C. Lincoln House (N 40° 27.041 W 075° 55.177)
D. Davies House (N 40° 27.053 W 075° 55.193)

Note: The Old Swede's House is located at N 40° 15.222 W 075° 43.697. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Note:  This cache has the hunting attribute selected. Hunters wear orange, and when the time is right, and so should you. During hunting season, it is best to do this series on a Sunday. The majority of the cache containers are hidden within 10 - 20 feet from the trail. Since these caches are hidden in the woods, you will encounter things like wildlife, poison ivy, bugs, ticks, etc. That is just part of geocaching in the great outdoors. Good Luck.

Please note that GC54VPP - Puzzle Hat trick was archived to make room for this BEST Geo-Art geocache.  Thanks Rentell.
