RAIL TRAIL UPDATE: A lot has transpired since I hid this cache in July, 2015. About a year ago (I'm writing this is July, 2024) the City of Sanford banned motorized vehicles (ATVs, dirt bikes and such) with the exception of the portion that is Snowmobile ITS 89 during the winter (snowmobiles only) and declared the trail an official city park. Class 1 & 2 electric bikes and bona fide handicapped conveyances are allowed. Maintenance vehicles are allowed with permission/notification to the Parks & Rec Department. The Trails Committee is scheduling trail upgrades (delayed by the destruction from the early April 2024 storm). Land abutting parts of the rail trail has been acquired by Three Rivers Land Trust (Sanford Community Forest) and the Mousam Way Land Trust (McKeon Reserve). A LOT is happening!!
The passage of time and resulting forest growth has made it harder to spot and retrieve and return. It is now a definite challenge unless you are very "height blessed". Some ingenuity - teamwork, climbing (monkey skills?) or other ingenuity is needed. Because of this, I've upped the difficulty to 3.5.
Don't forget to check the caches beyond Carpenter's Crossing for the coordinates to Quirky Crustacean, a cache to find on the way back to the Hanson's Ridge (The Dip) trailhead.
PS Deerflies are rampant in summer so be prepared with bud bug juice or long sleeves (even in hot weather).
