In 1893/4 a new school house for 81 pupils was erected here on about 2 acres of land resumed from Andrew Hinchcliff’s estate. It was built of local stone by James Booth of Pittwater for 260 pounds. It replaced an earlier school established by the Government in 1881, which had been housed in an existing weatherboard cottage.
In 1936 land to the North was acquired for the present Seaforth Public School which opened in 1940. The original school building stood empty until 1944 when it was converted into a children’s library & craft centre by a group of local woman. In 1945 the Balgowlah Seaforth Library was officially opened. In 1978, after libraries were established in public schools, membership was extended to adults.
The library is open Monday to Friday 2:00pm to 4:45pm and Thursday & Saturday mornings 9:30am to 11:30am, but the cache can be accessed at any time.
Parking: One hour street parking is available along Sydney Road, with some longer durations being available in surrounding streets.
Nearby Facilities: The library is located at the Western end of the Seaforth shopping strip, which has numerous food outlets, Newsagent with Post Office, Chemist, Commonwealth Bank branch (with ATM) & Westpac (ATM only). Also, the Balgowlah RSL Memorial Club is located on the Southern side of the shopping strip, behind the shops (best access is from Ethel Street).
The Cache is best described as a camouflaged “largish” micro, not quite big enough to be a “small”, and contains a Geocaching information sheet, log book & pencil. It is basically a park & grab, and is available any time (24/7).
Please replace exactly as found, ensuring the “lid” on the container is the correct way up.
We hope you enjoy our third geocache placement.
