Geocache Description:

I was inspired by the special souvenir available until September 12, 2015 for finding a cache with a rating of 5 for terrain or difficulty.  I love kayaking, and any cache that requires special equipment to get there gets a 5 terrain rating.

The cache container was originally a waterproof bottle floating in the water and tethered to the log. It had to be replaced many times. It is now out of the water and higher up.

Many beginners have never found a 5 rating cache and advanced cachers have found all of the water access caches in the area.

The island is a wildlife sanctuary.  No one is allowed to land there or approach the shore too closely.

Swimming is not allowed in Lake Needwood.  Use of a private boat requires permit ($5 a day).

An accessible/ADA compliant dock and launch system makes it possible for people with disabilities to launch both canoes and kayaks.

If you don’t have a boat, Lake Needwood Boat Rental rents kayaks, canoes, and rowboats for $10 an hour or $35 a day.  For the 2015 summer season they are closed Monday and Tuesday; September 7 - 28 they are open only Saturday and Sunday.  Call the Boat House 301-563-7540 (recorded information) or in season 301-563-7544 to make sure they will be open.  Rented boats cannot be beached on the shore.

This cache is possible only because of useful suggestions and support from the manager of the Lake Needwood Boat House.

To start off the contents are a waterproof log book, 3 pens, a travel bug and a path tag.
