Geocache Description:

The 2015 Caesar Creek Geo-trail contains a series of geocaches highlighting fossils that may be found in Southwestern Ohio including Caesar Creek State Park.

The cache is a small camoed plastic jar with a few items - don't forget your own writing utensil.

Brachiopods are the most common fossil in the area and easily can be found. The shells look similar to clams but the are not considered a clam. Brachiopods attached themselves to the sea bottom or other objects.
Brachiopod fossils have been useful indicators of climate changes during the Paleozoic era. When global temperatures were low, as in much of the Ordovician Era, the large difference in temperatures between equator and poles created different collections of fossils at different latitudes.

Permission for fossil collecting at Caesar Creek state park can be obtained thru the Corp of Engineers at: Fossil Collecting Rules

Please visit State Parks Survey to tell us about your experience at Ohio State Parks. Surveys are delivered directly to park management. We appreciate your patronage and support of Ohio’s state park system!
