Geocache Description:

Two sisters and an echo

Until now you might conclude, that the owner (at your service ) loves legends, stories and fairy tales. This cache is (again) about such thing… so, kids, be quiet and listen…

Once upon a time there was a king Marko, a real hero, and he had 4 sisters: Deva, Pesha, Kita and Zvezda. According to the rules in that time, women were not allowed to walk around and to travel unaccompanied. Therefore, when Pesha and Deva got married, and in order to enable them communication, King Marko ordered to build castles for his sisters. Deva’s castle (called Devini Kuli, Deva's tower) was built on a hill above a village called after her Devich, and Pesha’s castle was raised through the valley in a bid cave, called after her Peshna. So the two sisters could communicate through the echo that was created between two hills. Having in mind that two women usually need to share a LOT of information, I believe that the air between their castles trembled quite intensively

Entrance to Peshna

Okay, let’s Pesha and Deva babble little more, and find out something about the Peshna cave. The cave Peshna is located 7.5 kilometers from Makedonski Brod, along the road to Samokov. It is declared a monument of nature.

Inside the cave

This natural masterpiece leaves you breathless with its grandeur and beauty. It is 30 meters high and about 70 meters deep. There aren’t many stalactites on the ceiling of the cave, but nature itself has wonderfully shaped the rocks, over 2 meters high, with brilliant surface. Due to the big entrance, sunlight reaches the far end of the cave so you will have no problem walking around it. The ceiling and walls of the cave shine with amazing colors, from light green to deep purple.

The underground lake

Two hundred metres underground there is a lake with an endemic species of human fish whose skin resembles human skin, a feature that was only found in the inhabitants of Postojna Caves in Slovenia. The human fish or olm is a neotenic animal. In simple words, this means that an adult keeps most of its juvenile features. This means all human fish are babies that have taken on adult functions.

In May, when snow begins to melt and water comes pouring down from the mountains, you can hear the roar of the waterfalls inside the cave. North of the entrance there is a small stream that springs from a little lake at the back of the cave. According to some, it is actually Krapska River which creates several underground lakes and waterfalls. This spring dries up during the dry season.

The system of caves is supposed to be over 10 kilometres long which makes it one of the longest caves in Macedonia. Macedonian speleological societies along with several experts from France have been exploring the cave for years and have discovered incredible underground treasures seen nowhere else on the planet.

The fortress in Peshna

Peshna is registered as an archeological locality from the Late Antiquity in Macedonia. At the entrance of the cave there is a medieval fortress. From here you can see Devini Kuli (Deva’s Towers) on the opposite hill, so it might be true about the two sisters’ babbling !

The Deva's Tower in the distance

How to get there: You can drive from Kichevo toward Makedonski Brod (27 km), or from Prilep toward Makedonski Brod (40 km). Drive on R1106 from Suvodol north, 4.0 km. At the waypoint R1 turn east, drive about 0.5 km. The coordinates mark the beginning of the marked path toward the cave!!! Walk few hundreds meters and enter the cave. In the cave you can't catch the gps signal, therefore USE PHOTOSPOILER TO FIND THE CACHE!!!

The cache is small white plastic container.
