In the book, Rat is a a river rat who is kind, sociable and accommodating. Rat cares most for mole, whom he invites to live with him and to whom he acts as mentor.

I boken, är Rat en vattenråtta, som är snäll, sällskaplig och tillmötesgående. Rat bryr sig mest för mullvaden, som han uppmanar att leva med honom och som han fungerar som mentor.
