The Greenbelt is an excellent swathe of forest protected by the Parks Department, and offers ball parks, hiking and biking trails, and even a beautiful recreation center. This giant park spans 3,000 acres across the middle of Staten Island.
While hiking the Yellow trail and then into the Blue trail, I spied a deer. She was majestic, her eyes asking me to follow her, that she had something important to share. So I followed. She didn't realize that we'd left the trail, and were now flying thorugh trails that only she knew. Each few steps, she brought me further and further into the woods, until I laid eyes on what she'd promised:
A brook with trees surrounding it. The same brook I'd been walking next to along the trails.
"Couldn't we have stayed on the Blue for a bit longer?" I'd asked her. She blinked twice, as if in annoyance, and ran off across the brook and away from me.
In the months since I've realized this place is important, sacred ground for the things that nature hasn't forgotten. This, the gift of that deer, I share with you.
