Several years ago, while driving the route between Pembroke and Ottawa, my family encountered a turtle which was trying to cross the road. We stopped and managed to move it off towards the side of the road where it was headed. We knew that much about how to move a turtle out of dangerous traffic, but didn't think to check, or maybe didn't have the knowledge at the time, whether it was a Snapping or Painted Turtle. Our fingers didn't suffer any harm, so it was more likely a Painted Turtle.
This was just one of the many species which this river supports. I've seen common terns and gulls in the past, and recently spotted many Red-winged blackbirds, ducks, and a Great Blue Heron. There are probably a few water snakes in this slow moving river which the heron feeds on! 'Tis the way of nature.
There is plenty of room on the side of the road near the cache to safely pull off, but exercise care when doing so and when retrieving the cache. It's in a traditional spot, and of course, comes with its own cache guardian. BYOP. There's room for small trackables and geocoins.
While you're there, enjoy the sounds of nature at this waterway, and photos are always welcome!
And snakes ALIVE! Did I mention there was a twoonie for the FTF, but only if you're not squirmish! ;)
