Don't blink or you'll drive right on past this geocache. This geocache leads you to a historic burial site for Monroe's earliest residents. There is parking nearby, but you can also walk there along the River Raisin. Please be respectful to the monuments, benches, and decorations.
This is the site of the original St. Antoine burial ground. More than 500 of Frenchtown's earliest residents were buried here between 1795 and 1830 adjacent to the original St. Antoine Parish Church. In 1829, a new parish church was built two miles east of this site and a new cemetery was established at the same time o whe is now North Monroe Street. Over time, this earliest cemetery was lost. It was rediscovered in 1999 when several graves were uncovered during construction of a new subdivision. A community consensus quickly developed that the remains of the community's founders should not be disturbed and that this historic place should be preserved.
