The Fun in the Forest series is placed in and around The Big Wood at Cathkin Braes Country Park - one of Glasgow's local nature reserves. None of the caches are easy to access and have been placed with adventure in mind. Most are located off the beaten track. Please be careful to avoid creating an obvious trail.

Cathkin Braes occupies the highest point in Glasgow and offers panoramic views over the city. The Big Wood is a beautiful ancient woodland. It is an ideal place for family outings; offering many opportunities for play or just a peaceful stroll or picnic. There are many informal pathways and mountain bike trails throughout the park and an abundance of wildlife and wildflowers.

According to information from Glasgow City Council, "The eastern part of the Country Park was gifted to the city in 1887 by millionaire Mr James Dick who stipulated that the open space must by retained in a natural state and open for public enjoyment

  • The area was originally known as the Cathkin Hills and during the Iron Age a Celtic tribe known as the Damnonii lived here. The discovery of many artifacts has been recorded and several cairns still exist to this day.
  • Both the Big Wood and Cathkin Braes Park Wood are of ancient origin and appear on General Roy's Military Survey (c1750)."
