Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, or Lorde as most of us know her, is New Zealand's most successful international music artist in recent times, probably ever. "Royals", her first single release, was a world-wide smash, spending 9 weeks at number 1 in the US, selling more than 10 million copies, and winning her a Grammy for Song of the Year in 2013.
Lorde's second most successful single, Team, has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide, and her debut album "Pure Heroine" has sold around 2.7 million copies, 1.5 million of those in the US.
From the age of 14, Lorde worked with Universal to develop her sound and artistic vision. She was signed to Universal by her manager Scott Maclachlan when she was 13, and was initially put together with a succession of different songwriters in unsuccessful attempts to develop her own music.
A pairing with Joel Little clicked immediately, and in 2013 Lorde released "The Love Club EP" to rave reviews and some commercial success.
Lorde's style is described as consisting of the subgenres of electronica, pop and rock, including dream pop and indie-electro. In 2013, she was named among Time 's most influential teenagers in the world, and in the following year, she was in the Forbes 's "30 Under 30" list.
Lorde's lyrical style have been described as including typical themes of teen pop music, including "social anxiety, romantic yearning, debilitating ennui and booze-soaked ragers" and structured in a short story manner and praised that her songwriting ability "combines unmistakably teenage confusion, curiosity and confidence with word skills beyond her years."
