We’ve always loving walking the Glens and mountains of the Cairngorm’s and in particular Mar Forest. Since being introduced to Geocaching a few years ago I was surprised to find no caches in the Mar Lodge Estate. Such beautiful scenery with many gorges and waterfalls deserved some caches. Permission to place these two caches was given by National Trust for Scotland and Mar Lodge, one here along the Lui Water and the other along the Quioch Water. Both caches are small traditional in camo bags which are large enough to contain small swaps/tackables.
Close to where the Lui flows into the Dee lie the remains of a concrete weir this is a legacy of the Second World War, when teams of Canadian lumberjacks camped close by in order to fell timber for the war effort.
To reach the salmon ladder from the Linn of Dee car park take the path marked for Glen Lui. Follow this through the forestry and the path soon emerges onto the main track. There is a path opposite where you come out on to the main path that leads to a short walk to a waterfall where there is a salmon ladder. Leave the main track to follow the narrow path close to the river. A short distance along, you reach a splendid view of the Lui gorge. At this point are the stone remains of an old abandoned salmon ladder. These can be reached by another path down to the salmon ladder. Take this path and follow the path past the salmon ladder, care should be taken whilst in this area and cache has been placed in this area further along the path.
