The terrain rating of 5 is noted due to the length of the hike, 4.5 miles one way from the trailhead on Basin Road, the elevation gain, strong winds that come over the ridge, and there are some steep drop-offs along Gastineau Peak. Please be gentle with the alpine environment, stay on the established trails. Reminder, people have been lost on this mountain, use good judgement, hike with a buddy, tell someone where you plan to hike!
There is a prize for FTF!
You could hike farther, a rough trail continues to the northeast and you can access Sheep Mountain. It is at 4,238.
1) Ride the Mount Roberts Tram. This will get you to 1,745 feet and then you can start your hike. It will cost $45.00 for an adult, $30.00 for youth 3-12, and 2 and under ride free (2022 prices). The tram is open May through September. Note: No dogs on the tram. Plan on 2+ hours one-way to reach the cache.
2) Hike the Mount Roberts Trail from the trailhead on Basin Road. The trail is very well established and is popular. Can be muddy. Steady switchbacks help with the elevation gain. Stay on the main trail to reduce erosion from short-cuts. Plan on 3+ hours one-way to reach the cache.
HIKE FROM THE TRAILHEAD, TRY THIS!
Spend $10 at the restaurant/bar/gift shop and ride the tram down for "free" (a cold beer or two from the Alaska Brewing Co. is my choice). Keep your receipt, the tram crew check.
