The Giba Gorge project is a collaboration between private landowners and the eThekwini Municipality to manage the area for conservation and recreation.
The area consists of lush scarp forest, with a wide variety of indigenous trees and undergrowth. There is also KwaZulu-Natal sandstone, sourveld grasslands, as well as rivers and wetlands, and sandstone cliffs – all with different ecosystems.
In the gorge are about 20 different types of frog species, including the Kloof frog, which is found only at Karkloof and here.
Whilst in the scarp forest look out for the ruby-footed, giant millipede which is found only in and around this area.
On an early morning walk you may also encounter numerous birds, including Blue-mantled Crested Flycatchers, Golden Weaver and African Firefinches or if you are lucky a shy duiker.
