Geocache Description:

Around Aylestone is a series of low difficulty, but varied caches designed to take you on an almost circular walk around this historic village.

The first known documented evidence of Aylestone Village was in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and the name 'Aylestone' is thought to derive from the Anglo Saxon Anglo-Saxon ‘Aegel’s tun’, meaning ‘Aegel’s settlement.’

While Aylestone has developed significantly in the 20th century, and has slowly become part of the city of Leicester, a walk through the back streets soon reveals its heritage. With narrow winding streets, 18th century cottages and many medieval architectural features still on display.

Highlights of the walk include :

Aylestone Hall - A Grade II listed historic building, parts of which date to 1339 set in beautiful public gardens.

The Packhorse Bridge - The stone foot bridge, probably dating back to the 15th century sits within the meadows, and displays great views.

St Andrews Church - The Church of St. Andrew, Aylestone, has stood in the village for nearly 800 years.

The River Soar and the Grand Union Canal - Which make up part of the cache route - these water features run straight through the middle of the village. Often flooding in the wetter months (so beware some caches may be inaccessible at times.

Kings Lock And Lock Keepers Cottage - The last remaining Lock Keepers cottage in Leicester.

Aylestone Meadows - Stretching Across a large swathe of Leicester, these meadows make up a giant green space in the city, and are host to many beautiful walks. You will often see horses grazing here in summer, and in winter as it turns into a giant flood plain, you can get some amazing photos.

Aylestone Farm - Hidden right in the middle of the village.
