Se trata de uno de los templos religiosos más llamativos del bohemio pueblo de Altea. La originalidad y distinción viene dada por su colorida cúpula construida con singulares tejas azulesque se ha ido ganando el aprecio de sus habitantes y miles de turistas que la visitan.
A pesar de las numerosas edificaciones religiosas que se encuentran repartidas por todo el municipio, la Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Consuelo se alza como la principal de Altea.
Está ubicada en la plaza principal del Casco Antiguo, en un ambiente totalmente bohemio donde es fácil escuchar de fondo las agradables notas de los músicos que tocan en la calle; se encuentra rodeada de fabulosos restaurantes y bares, así como de originales tiendas de artesanía en las que podremos encontrar objetos con su imagen plasmada.
Esta iglesia parroquial posee su parte de historia para con el pueblo alteano pues la parroquia inicial de principios del siglo XVI, totalmente en ruinas y de menor tamaño, fue levantada con el esfuerzo tanto económico como físico de todos los habitantes del pueblo un siglo más tarde en este mismo enclave.
Todos ellos se llenaron de júbilo al saber que se podría reanudar la actividad religiosa y ayudaban como podían a la regeneración del edificio aportando mulos de carga, agua o para aquellos que se lo podían permitir, aportando una cantidad de 145 pesetas semanalmente.
Fue durante los años 1901-1910 aproximadamente cuando se levantó finalmente el nuevo templo con una arquitectura de estilo neobarroco que se aprecia en nuestros días.
Cabe destacar que para ello fue clave el empeño que puso del párroco Juan Bautista Cremades Peiró, hizo rectificar la posición de la fachada retrasándola un poco y construyendo así mismo una cúpula más pequeña decorándola con piezas modernistas de color azul cobalto, típicas de la zona levantina.
Si uno se detiene a observar minuciosamente los detalles descubrirá figuras con forma de dragón o hiladas de tejas blancas como si de una espina dorsal se tratase, algo que la ha convertido en símbolo de la localidad.
Si estamos de paso por Altea no debemos irnos sin, al menos, haber visitado esta maravillosa y singular iglesia y de disfrutar de sus alrededores.
