The following information was obtained from an article published in the Dunn Daily Record Community Yearbook 2014, and written by Tyler Douglas.
Devil's Racetrack Road was originally known as Devil's Race Path. In an published in The Smithfield Herald in the summer of 1917, Johnston County Sheriff C.S. Powell says the road was enjoyed by "turf lovers" - individuals who would hold makeshift horse races on the curvy road. Legend says a stranger appeared and entered a race without invitation or introduction. He was riding a large black horse and took off with the starting line. Powell stated," (The stranger) followed in the wake of the first go, passed all on the half way, his horse's nostrils blowing smoke like a tar-kiln, going on and on and never looking back and never returning." No one ever determined the stranger's identity.
This road is also listed as a scenic byway and will lead you to Howell Woods and Bentonville Battlegrounds, where other caches are located.
You are looking for a plastic ammo container that should be very easy to find. You will not have to stir around the brush or go into the ditch. You can also park in the small area directly in front of the geocache.
Depending on the time of the year, watch out for insects, thorns, and other wildlife.
Feel free to park in the driveway. The road is too busy to park alongside.
