Die Ortschaft Karnol besitzt ihren religiösen Mittelpunkt in der Johannes dem Täufer geweihten Kapelle auf dem "Holderer" oder "Karnoler Pichl". Dieser erhebt sich als markanter Hügel oberhalb des Eingangs zur Rienzschlucht. Die exponierte Lage dieses Kirchberges gab Anlass zu der Vermutung, es könne sich hier bereits in vorchristilicher Zeit um einen Kultplatz gehandelt haben. Belegt ist, dass im Jahre 1113 eine Kirche auf dem Hügel geweiht wurde. Man gelangt zu der Kirche über den Holdererhof.
Vom romanischen Vorgängerbau stammt vermutlich noch die halbrunde Apsis. Umbauten erfolgten sowohl zu Anfang als auch gegen Ende des 15. Jhs. Im späten Mittelalter dürfte auch der Erkerturm errichtet worden sein. Der Innenraum weist Fresken verschiedener Stilepochen auf - von einer späten Arbeit des sog. "Weichen Stils" (um 1425) über die frühe Renaissance (nach 1530) bis zu einem volkstümlichen Nachhall der Spätrenaissance (1643).

La località di Cornale ha il suo centro religioso nella chiesetta di S. Giovanni Battista. La collina si eleva al di sopra dell'ingresso della gola del fiume Rienza. La posizione di questa montagna sacra dà luogo alla supposizione che già in epoca precristiana sia stato un luogo di culto. È documentata la consacrazione di una chiesa già nel 1113. Si arriva alla chiesa passando per il maso Holderer.
Alla prima costruzione romanica risale probabilmente l'abside semicircolare. Lavori furono eseguiti all'inizio ed alla fine del XV sec. Anche il campanile ad "erker" é stato cotruito nel Tardo Medioevo.L'interno presenta affreschi appartenenti a diversi stili, dal tardo "Stile morbido" (intorno al 1425) passando per il primo Rinascimento (dopo il 1530) fino ad un eco del tardo Rinascimento (1643).

Beneath St. Andrä, in a charming position on a hill, the small church of St. John the Baptist is situated in Karnol. Mentioned already in 1113, the renovation and the decor of the 15th century characterize the little house of God.A tender net- vault covers the inside, that impressions with cycles of frescoes of different periods. Beside the life and the death of the church patron John, the works of mercy and some saints, the martyrdom of the saint Ursula is of extraordinary quality.The representation in the apsis dates back to the Renaissance (around 1520), it shows the return of the saint Ursula with 11,000 virgins from Rome to Köln, where arrow riflemen of the Huns’ king Guam kill her. The wide scenery of the frescoes is flanked by John the Baptist and John the Evangelist.
