Before Interstate 80 and Boreal Ski Area were built, there was a pleasant meadow, with Castle Creek running through it. If you've ever driven up to Donner Pass, you've been there. You may have noticed several rock outcrops on the West side overlooking the road.
An old map identifies them as the Andesite Buttes, not to be confused with Andesite Peak.
Easiest way to get there is to go up the road that leads to Castle Pass, and turn left at N39° 20.505' W120° 20.908'. This road is used in winter by snowmobiles. A little further up the road at N39° 20.470' W120° 21.132' is a drainage that leads up and behind the two buttes. Going this way avoids most of the brush and steep slopes.
If you have a 4x4 with good ground clearance you can get to this spot with ease.
Cache is located on the South end of the butte. Lots of people visit this area, so be sure to replace as found to avoid muggles.
If you find the USGS marker, you will be within 6 feet of the cache.
