Geocache Description:

A quick dock-and-grab off of a picturesque private island that once hosted the Outward Bound Hurricaine Island School and current hosts of the Hurricane Island Center for Leadership which holds overnight programs from May to November every year.

Make sure you sign the guestbook in the house by the main dock, pay the fee if you choose to moor overnight and respect all posted signage as not all areas of the island are open to the public.

Most famously among outdoor enthusiasts, the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School (HIOBS) based adventurous leadership programming on this island beginning in 1964. In 2006 HIOBS moved their base of operations to Camden, Maine and continues to hold leadership programs for youth and adults in locations from Maine to Florida.

After a short hiatus, Hurricane Island Foundation was established and now utilizes the former Outward Bound-era buildings to run programming on the island (youth programming primarily focused on natural resources, ecology and marine biology). They even teach adults regularly and host classes for wilderness medicine, wood-fired bread-making and more.

This small, picturesque island has had inhabitants for over a century. Before Hurricane Island Outward Bound School started its sea-based leadership programs here in 1964 this private island had a thriving industry and a year-round population of 250 centered around it's main natural resource. Learn more about the islands' fascinating industrial past here.

The craftsmen who lived and worked on this island used sweat, steam and iron to turn raw materials into the likes of the Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis Post Offices; the Brooklyn Bridge; the Suffolk County Courthouse, Boston and the Washington Monument. From the moment you step on the island there is evidence of man and machine toiling to transform this material into things that would outlast them.

Look to some of the first evidence of this islands' industrial past you encounter once stepping on the island to find this cache.

Remember, this is a quick dock-and-grab and very little island time should be needed to find it near the main dock.
