O Casino das Furnas destinava-se ao entretenimento dos hóspedes do Hotel e da sociedade micaelense.
O Vale das Furnas, parafraseando Almeida Garrett em Viagens na Minha Terra é “um destes lugares privilegiados pela natureza, sítios amenos e deleitosos em que as plantas, o ar, a situação, tudo está numa harmonia suavíssima e perfeita: não há ali nada grandioso nem sublime, mas há uma como simetria de cores, de tons, de disposição em tudo quanto se vê e se sente, que não parece senão que a paz, a saúde, o sossego do espírito e o repouso do coração devem viver ali, reinar ali um reinado de amor e benevolência.”
Certamente por isso é que a partir do séc. XVIII, naturalistas, botânicos e outros cientistas, nomeadamente, Charles Darwin, visitaram demoradamente os Açores e para além de estudarem a sua constituição geológica, fauna e flora, procederam à análise das águas ali existentes. Segundo Brandão da Luz, já no início do século XVI, Diogo Gomes de Sintra deixou registos em latim da sua viagem à ilha de São Miguel, descrevendo “águas quentes naturais e sulfurosas” e “uma grande planície de cinzas a ferver”.
Tão grande riqueza tornou-se apetecível aos países mais desenvolvidos e perante a ocorrência da população micaelense que ali procurava cura para as suas maleitas, embora em banhos de precárias condições, Thomas Ashe num livro sobre História dos Açores, publicado em 1813, realçava a importância destas ilhas para o império britânico e defendia que o governo inglês deveria ocupar estas ilhas e transformá-las numa colónia.
Daí para cá, são inúmeras as referências à beleza e potencialidades termais do Vale. De tal sorte que o abastado comerciante norte-americano Thomas Hickling, vice-cônsul daquele país nos Açores, construiu no centro das Furnas um pavilhão, jardim e tanque de água férrea que mais tarde, a família Bensaúde iria integrar numa unidade hoteleira muito conceituada.
As potencialidades termais das Furnas e da respetiva lagoa, rodeadas de terrenos de elevado aproveitamento agrícola, frutícola e florestal, atraíram as famílias dos terra-tenentes e de outros burgueses que lá construíram casas de veraneio, onde passavam largos períodos estivais, dando um ar cosmopolita e urbano àquela povoação do interior da Ilha.
Ficaram célebres os concertos da banda Harmónica Furnense, promovidos no parque Terra Nostra pelo Marquês da Praia, seu fundador, que congregavam a alta sociedade micaelense.
Na década de 30, a família Bensaúde abre o Hotel Terra Nostra e o Casino, onde, para além do jogo, decorreram bailes e serões afamados.
Foi a partir de então que o Vale das Furnas conheceu grande projeção internacional. A maioria dos visitantes nacionais e estrangeiros sabia ao que vinha e dava conta das belezas daquele recanto paradisíaco nas suas impressões de viagem.
A nova rede viária encurtou distâncias e permite deslocações mais rápidas e económicas. As Furnas são um destino privilegiado de lazer e de contacto com a natureza que convém revisitar.
Antigamente, eram frequentes excursões organizadas nas diversas localidades, agrupando a filarmónica ou grupo folclórico, acompanhados de familiares. Só isso seria um ótimo chamariz para os forasteiros de dentro e de fora que ali afluem, dando um ar de festa ao Vale e impulsionando o tecido comercial. Ao mesmo tempo, as localidades visitantes poderiam aproveitar para distribuir informação sobre elas próprias para atrair forasteiros. Seria uma informação em rede.

Casino Furnas was intended to entertain the guests of Hotel and Azorean society.
