Greetings from Madeline Island, named after Madeleine Cadotte, daughter of Chief White Crane and wife of fur trader Michael Cadotte. The Ojibwe (Chippewa) and other native peoples made their home here for hundreds of years before European contact.
***LOGGING THE APOSTLE ISLANDS***
The immense quantities of pine attracted loggers to the surrounding forests of the Lake Superior region in the latter half of the 19th century. Madeline Island and the other Apostles Islands had the distinct advantage of immediate water transportation of the logs to the sawmills of Bayfield, Washburn, Ashland, and even Duluth. Economically the islands provided a quick log from the stump to the shoreline, and to the mill. All the Apostle Islands gave up their timber to the crosscut saw to feed the sawmills.
