Le torri costiere costituivano il sistema difensivo, di avvistamento e di comunicazione lungo la fascia costiera del Regno di Sicilia. Furono costruite per arginare le frequenti incursioni dei corsari arabi durante il XVI secolo. Da ogni torre era possibile scrutare il mare e vedere la torre successiva, con la possibilità di inviare segnali luminosi e di fumo per trasmettere un messaggio o richiedere soccorso. Nel periodo di massima funzionalità permettevano di fare il periplo dell'isola nello spazio di un solo giorno. Le torri costellano gran parte delle coste dell'Italia meridionale e sono spesso interessanti dal punto di vista architettonico.

Coastal towers were the defensive, signaling and communication system along the coastline of the Kingdom of Sicily. They were built to stop the frequent attacks by arab pirates during the XVI century. From each single tower it was possible to watch the sea and the next tower, with the ability to send light and smoke signals to send a message or ask for help. At the time of greatest functionality, it was possible for a message to be passed around the whole perimeter of the island in a single day. These towers can be found along the coastline of a good part of southern Italy, and they are usually interesting from an architectural point of view.
