This cache like the plane once soared above the ground. But has had a crash itself! Now you can go on your own recovery mission!!
The Southern Cloud memorial is dedicated to Australia's most mysterious plane disapperance. On March 21 1931 a plane travelling on it's daily journey from Sydney to Melbourne, never made it's destination with 8 people on board. After a search lasting 18 days no clues or wreckage had been found. The Southern Cloud remained a total mystery for 27 years... Until on the 26th October 1958 a worker on the Snowy Hydro scheme, went off track on a bushwalk and stumbled upon the wreck in the heavily timbered mountainside. It was appromately 25km off course from its direct Sydney to Melbourne route. The mystery was a mystery no more! It was stated that severe weather had brought the three engine plane down. The weeks after the discovery resulted in a huge souveniring mission and in 1962 the cooma Lions club erected this memoral. The tragedy of the Southern Cloud claimed 8 souls and left a lasting legacy of safer air travel. After this disapperance it was recommended that radios be fitted in regular passenger flights so that such changes in weather can be communicated!
