[ITA] IL LAGO DI MERGOZZO
Il lago di Mergozzo è uno specchio lacustre della provincia del Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, il quarto per estensione della regione Piemonte.
Originatosi dal riempimento della conca lasciata libera e scavata dall’azione erosiva di un ghiacciaio, in tempi antichi era l'estrema punta del braccio occidentale del Lago Maggiore, ma le continue inondazioni del fiume Toce, immissario di quest'ultimo, formarono un braccio di terra che divise i due bacini. Oggi su questa piana alluvionale sorge una frazione di Verbania, Fondotoce. Tale separazione non è però avvenuta in modo completo: uno stretto canale collega infatti ancora i due laghi.
Il lago, benché di piccola dimensione, raggiunge la profondità di 74 metri e sulle sue rive si affaccia il caratteristico centro abitato di Mergozzo che dà il nome al lago.
Oggi il piccolo bacino risulta essere uno dei più puliti d'Italia: è vietato l'uso di barche a motore ed è meta di turismo come testimoniano i numerosi campeggi sulle sue sponde. Lo sport più praticato è la canoa/kayak, rappresentato dalla squadra agonistica Mergozzo Canoa Club, ma anche la pesca sportiva conta molti appassionati.

Lake Mergozzo is a stretch of water in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and it is the fourth largest in the Piedmont region.
It formed when the empty valley eroded by a glacier was filled by the melted waters of the latter. In ancient times, Lake Mergozzo was at the tip of the westernmost branch of Lake Maggiore, but the repeated floods caused by its tributary, the river Toce, formed a land bridge that separated the two lakes. Fondotoce, a hamlet of Verbania, is now standing on this alluvial plain. The separation has not been total, though: in fact, a narrow canal still links the two lakes.
Despite being small in size, the lake reaches a maximum depth of 74 metres and the characteristic town of Mergozzo, which gives it its name, looks onto its shores.
These day, the small lake is one of the cleanest in Italy: the use of motor boats is forbidden and the many campsites on its shores are evidence of a thriving tourism. Canoeing and kayaking are the main sports, represented by the competitive Mergozzo Canoa Club, but also angling counts many enthusiasts.
