There were few roads; for most of the route the coaches ran up the beach, but from what is now Te Horo Beach it veered off the sand and ran for some 3.5km along the top of the gravel bank that lines the coast south of the Otaki River.
At the river it veered upriver slightly to avoid the ever-shifting gravel of the river-mouth. The crossing must have been hazardous –even in low flow the Otaki is a substantial river to ford.
Old Coach Road South is a street in Otaki that continues the route north. The route becomes Rangiuru Road, then Te Rauparaha Street, then Convent Road, then Old Coach Road North, which heads back toward the beach. The Old Coach Road III (GC62EM7) is located near the northern end of the public road.
The cache is situated below the more recent flood control stop-bank that lines the north bank of the river. There is a walking track (which is in fact the old coach road) from the end of the street to the cache site; note that it crosses private land, so please respect the farming operation and animals. You might like to climb up onto the stop-bank, watch the river as it flows by and decide where you would choose to attempt your crossing.
Cache is a small tablet bottle with a smaller one inside to keep it dry. The cache is in an open area, so please be discreet, watch for prying eyes and re-hide it carefully.
Congratulations Yeetrees for the FTF! 2TF goes to Flowerydaze.
