The Second Day: The Firmament-In technical terms it would be "an expanse’ of terrestrial gases—or perhaps also extraterrestrial matter within our solar system or throughout space".

In non-technical terms, this allowed us to have our atmosphere, the air we breath, the expanse where birds fly (possibly even the space within which our solar system exists), this firmament participates in the hydrological system, IE. evaporation, raining, etc., along with our wind and other weather systems.
