The muskox and the caribou are the only two ungulates that survived the end of the Pleistocene Era, 10 000 years ago. Muskoxen have dark, thick shaggy fur which helps to keep them warm throughout the Arctic winters. Their front hooves are larger than their hind hooves, which helps them to dig through the snow for their food. When the snow crust gets too difficult to break through, the muskox will lift and drop its huge head to break through to the food. Muskox bulls (males) challenge other males during the breeding season with a deep rumbling roar-like bellow. They are one of the most powerful land animals in the world and demonstrate their strength by charging at one another at full force and clash their heads together. They have an air pocket between their brain and skull which helps to prevent brain damage. Muskoxen work together to protect their young from predators. They will form a circle around their young, with their sharp horns facing outwards.
