John Montagu was a gambling man. He was also the 4th Earl of Sandwich, a minor noble of a minor town in England, but in 1762 he was primarily a gambler. His marathon gaming sessions would sometimes last all day causing him to miss meals. Legend has it that one night he was hungry enough to order a servant to create a meal of bread and meat that he could hold with just one hand to not interrupt his games. The servant returned with a slice of salt-beef in between two slices of toasted bread ... and The Sandwich was born! Every November 3rd we celebrate the Lord Sandwich's birthday in honor of his (or more likely his servant's) invention - the greatest thing before sliced bread!
As a fun side note - The actual town of Sandwich is neighbors with a tiny hamlet called Ham. There's a famous sign post nearby that lists the distances to each town that of course then reads "Ham - Sandwich". Naturally, someone had to place a geocache nearby.
