In Italia la pratica del gioco del Golf ebbe inizio a Firenze nel 1889 grazie alla folta colonia inglese che realizzò un percorso di 18 buche sui terreni dei Principi Demidoff a nord della città. Nel 1934 venne inaugurato il bellissimo percorso sulle colline alle porte del Chianti e fu fondato il glorioso Circolo del Golf dell'Ugolino che da allora rappresenta il Golf a Firenze.
Oltre ad avere avuto tanti campioni tra i dilettanti ed i professionisti l’Ugolino ha ospitato numerosi Open Internazionali.
Spicca su tutti l’Open d'Italia del 1983, il 40° per l'esattezza che rimane il più avvincente torneo che si sia mai svolto in Italia. Fu vinto da Bernard Langer in un appassionante play-off con Ballesteros e Sandy Lyle. Vi partecipò il gotha del golf internazionale di allora, oltre ai già citati Langer, Ballesteros e Lyle giocarono sui fairway dell'Ugolino Greg Norman, Sam Torrance, Pinero, Canizares, Brown oltre ai nostri Costantino Rocca e Baldovino Dassù.
L'emozione ed il ricordo di quell'evento sono ancora vivi nei nostri Soci più anziani. Nel 2009, il CONI (Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano), come segno di riconoscimento per l’attività svolta nella sua lunga storia ha insignito il Circolo del Golf dell'Ugolino della Medaglia d'Oro al Merito Sportivo e ha consegnato al Circolo il vessillo olimpico.
Inoltre, il Consiglio Direttivo della PGA Italiana ha incluso negli undici membri della Hall Of Fame del Golf Italiano ben tre grandi personaggi dell'Ugolino per rendere onore al contributo da loro dato allo sviluppo del Golf Italiano e per i grandi meriti sportivi conseguiti, essi sono: Baldovino e Federica Dassù e Franco Rosi.

In 1934 a new course was created at the edge of the beautiful Chianti country and the Ugolino golf club came into existence, taking over the mantle of the Florence golf club. Besides numbering many Champions among its Member, both amateur and professional, Ugolino has hosted numerous international competition. Outstanding among these was the 40th Italian Open in 1983. This Remains probably, the most enthralling tournament ever played in Italy. It was won, in the end, by Bernard Langer following a thrilling play-off with Severiano Ballesteros and Sandy Lyle. In addition to them, the field boasted such giants of the game as Greg Norman, Sam Torrance, Pinero, Canizares and Brown, not to mention the leading italians of the time, Costantino Rocca and Baldovino Dassù. The Event is still vivid in the memory of the older Members. In 2009, in recognition of its long service to golf, the Italian Olimpic Commitee awarded Ugolino the Gold Medal for sporting achievement. As a further honour, Ugolino can claim no fewer than three out of the eleven members of the Hall of Fame of Italian golf, nominated by the Italian PGA. These are Baldovino Dassù, Federica Dassù and Franco Rosi, recognised for their contribution to the development of golf in Italy.
