You are looking for a mighty mega tube wrapped in Camo tape. It is right along the shore, but you shouldn't have to exit the kayak. We left a pair of unactivated pins that are trackable on Geocaching.com for the FTF.
The entire series was placed while using kayaks and that would be the recommended mode of transportation for completing the series as regular sized boats wouldn't be able to get you close enough.
I wouldn't recommend coming out on the ice in the winter either, but to each their own!
