Hayesville is a delightful small town in western North Carolina with a long and significant history. The Hayesville square is also the site of many enjoyable activities, including weekly flea/farmers market in season, evening concerts, crafts fairs, car shows (don't miss the Ugliest Truck competition!), parades, and lots of good shops and restaurants.
Hayesville and Clay County have a rich Cherokee heritage as well, with beginnings as the significant Cherokee village of Quanassee Town. The most notable feature of the village is the Spikebuck Mound nearby. This cache would be an ideal starting point to follow the history of the area. A series of caches, beginning with Clay County History (GC3FDKR), will take you on a short walking tour on the newly created Quanassee Trail, ending at the observation point for the Spikebuck Mound. Along the way, you will see Native plants, grand old trees, and a recreational park that may well have been the site of Cherokee games and competitions, including a favorite competition called Anetso (stickball).
Congrats to our friends and geocaching mentors, LL100 & MXCR, for yet another FTF, in an area that previously held one of their longstanding geocaches. (Dang! We just gave you another hint!)
