On old road, 2 miles from Big Cultus Lake, approx 45 miles from Bend Oregon.
This is my first hide and I hope it provides some fun. Passenger car is fine. I have been hunting bench marks and other type markers for several years, but until a few days ago I was not aware of this web site and this new GPS type of fun! I see that lots of these caches are hidden in or around old down and dead logs. A bit of history: In the 1920,s there was a wagon road from Odell lake, up past Davis lake, over to Cultus lake, then on to Lava lake. This site is on a section of that very old roadbed. The surveyors in those days often put the brass disks on the top of a large rock or boulder. The first thing to find is a very old brass GS disk, put there over 70 years ago.You will only be 2 miles from Cultus lake, so after the hunt, be sure and pop over there and enjoy the view from the front of the lodge. To reach the site: take Hwy 46, Cascade Lakes Hwy from Bend up past Mt. Bachelor. From the Elk Lake Resort turn off, continue on hwy 46 for approx 12 miles. Turn right on to forest road 4635. This is the turn off to Cultus Lake, it's paved and marked. Continue till you come to the junction with road# 4630, a gravel road.Turn right, turn on the GPS and follow the arrow. (your within 1.5 miles and have only 1 more turn) You can drive and stop along the old road within 40 feet of the Brass disk and it should be fairly easy to find. The actual cache is in a 30 cal. ammo can and is fairly well hidden X feet from the brass disk. to find X: There is a date stamped into the disk. Write down the 2nd and 4th digits. Now double that new 2 digit number. That many feet to the goodies! Which direction? well, you can always look at the hints. After your done here, follow the cords in the can on down the old road about 2 miles to another real old and hard to see disk! (look for a very old blackend 4x4 witness post about 15 feet from the right edge of the road). (Addendum: No can or goodies at this 2nd location, just another old brass disk.)
Various goodies are in the can, some old advertising gimmicks from a store long since gone, other misc. trinkets and 1 Mickey Mouse Pez dispenser! First one in gets it!Please sign the book, and let me know how you liked the hunt. This would be a great one for kids of all ages, the forest here is open and easily walked upon. The drive up the lakes highway is always a nice ride.
Regards, Disk Hunter
