A short series of caches of varying types, using footpaths mainly away from roads. The paths are said to follow the route used to get stone from the Shotover & Headington quarries down to the river for transportation. The walk is about a mile and a half, starting level then dipping slowly down towards the river. This cache takes you almost to the Thames; you may be able to hear the weirs from here.
Parking can be found at either end of the series. For Cowley, there are pay and display car parks in the shopping areas, though watch closing times. From here, it is a very pleasant walk through the church yard of the Norman parish church of St.James, Beauchamp Lane, following the footpath signs. There is also on street parking on Church Hill Road, near the start of the footpath. At the Iffley end, there is some on street parking but roads are narrow; please respect residents.
If with geo-kids, please take particular care crossing the one major road; at Iffley please note pavements are only on one side of the road in places.
Another small nano. If you want to carry on down to Iffley lock and the Thames, follow Mill Lane down the slope, then a further steep slope to the right. There’s a puzzle cache here you may like to check out; GCVJC2, Twitcher 4; The Reed Bunting. There are two noisy weir bridges to cross before you arrive at Iffley Lock.
If you have time, St.Mary’s church nearby is very well worth a visit.
