Geocache Description:

The above co-ordinates will take you to a Memorial Plaque in the free car park at West Angle Bay.

We set out to make this a virtual cache but then discovered that 'virtuals' have not been permitted since 2006 - so that means more work and walking for you as this is now a simple 2 stage multi.

The memorial refers to activity at Angle Airfield during the Second World War. It mentions an event in which a Sunderland Flying Boat presumably from Pembroke Dock made a forced landing. It was subsequently successfully dismantled.

3 Facts needed:-

1. The aircraft which made an unexpected but successful forced landing was number - T9 AA4

2. There were 1B Group Fighter Command Squadrons based at Angle.

3. Angle Airfield closed in  - 194C.

To find the cache at the final stage the co-ordinates are - N51 41.ABC  W005 06.CAB.

When we chose ground zero we did not initially realise that it was within a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) i.e.. West Angle Bay Early Medieval Settlement. The monument is not obvious to the untutored eye and comprises a well preserved cemetery dating to the Medieval period (6th- 10th centuries AD) The monument lies in the improved pasture on either side of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path on the cliff top overlooking West Angle Bay to the north. It consists of 2 parts. The first part is a faint oval earthwork 20m x 25m. Excavation has shown that this formed a stone boundary around an area of tightly packed graves. This oval is within a below ground feature - a rectangle 120m x 50m identified by geophysical survey. The second part is west of the above and consists of a narrow spit of land protruding into the sea. The monument is of national importance to potentially enhance the knowledge of Medieval burial and funerary practises. When searching for the cache there is NO need to disturb the ground in this SAM. The area is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The cache has been placed after consultation with both CADW and Natural Resources Wales.
