Halmyris was a Roman and Byzantine fort, locally known as the site where the bodies of two Christian saints, Epictet and Astion, were recently uncovered. The first stone castrum at Halmyris was built during the reign of the emperor Trajan. Believe it or not, but during that time, the fort was just a few kilometers away from the Black Sea!
