From this cache, you are less than a half mile from the site of General James Longstreet's post-Civil-War home. His statue in the northern corner of City Park marks the location of his 65-acre farm. Longstreet also owned a hotel near the train depot in Gainesville (under renovation) and he is buried in Gainesville's Alta Vista Cemetery. For the locations of these sites, you can contact the Northeast Georgia History Center at www.negahc.org.
Continuing a mile ride south on Highway 60 takes you down historic Green Street with it's antebellum houses, then past Brenau University on your left. Turn right at Washington Street, nod to President George Washington as you pass, and continue two blocks to arrive at Gainesville's quaint, historic square:
o Enjoy the many shops and restaurants in and around the square. Ask anyone for recommendations or directions. It's a friendly place.
o The Confederate solder statue on the square is said to be the only such statue facing north, ready to engage the enemy.
o On one corner of the square, you'll see a large shiny ball. It's the sun. From here, you can spend an enjoyable afternoon locating the planets that are placed at appropriate distances from the sun.
