Geocache Description:

This is a short 3-stage multi. A walk from one monument to another (800 meters) and then to the cache (about 250 meters). So in total you'll walk a little over 1 km from first stage to the cache. The area is (relatively) safe, but do it during DAYLIGHT only! Don't wander around in Luanda in darkness...

Monument 1: Independence Square

At the posted coordinates, you will find yourself at INDEPENDENCE SQUARE, formerly known as “Largo Primeiro de Maio” (May 1st Square). The square was remodeled and renamed in 2002 as Independence Square in order to match the name to its historical and cultural value. It is a well known boulevard in Angola's capital city and it is the place where Agostinho Neto, the first Angolan president, made the proclamation of the National Independence from Portugal on 11 November 1975. A monument with a bronze sculpture of him on the top facing the square was built in September, 2000.

Independence SquareThe Memorial is ornamented with the best known of President Neto's poems, titled (translated in English) “We Shall Return”. Around the monument you can see gravures portraying people breaking handcuffs and fleeing from prisons, liberation fighters in a battle, people being alphabetized and other images depicting the gains and rights that could be achieved with the proclamation of the Angola's National Independence.

The Independence Square is also used by local writers and singers as a venue to launch their books and music CDs. The square, sometimes called "Liberty Square", has also been used as a place for freedom expression through political rallies and social manifestations.

On this square, at the monument, find the following:

1) What is the LAST word of the poem (right above "Outubra de 1960)? Take the consolidated number. That is A.

2) What word stands out in this poem? It's actually a 3 word sentence, that is repeated again and again. I'm looking for the LAST word of that sentence. Now COUNT the number of letters of that word. That is B.

3) On the BACKside of the monument (above the painting with the soldiers) there's a bronze plaque. What is the DATE on this plaque? Take the consolidated number of the YEAR. That is C.

Now walk about 800 meters in SW direction. Or if you prefer coordinates, to: S08°49.965', E013°14.389'... There you'll find another monument:

Monument 2: The Angolan Women's Memorial

The "Angolan Heroes Women’s Memorial" is among the best known attractions in the city of Luanda and a very appealing place where families, couples, and individuals go to have a portrait or professional photo taken. As the monument is located in an area of several high schools, it is common to find there young people studying under the shadow of trees. The place is busy almost everyday, but it is especially crowded in the month of March, known in Angola as the “woman’s month”, when the monument becomes the center of attention and wreaths are deposited at the square. The garden area is marked green and the structure is made of seven bronze sculptures, three of them imposed on the top, portraying the following: A lady on the right with a hoe, on the left is another lady with an ammunition box and a leading lady in the center with an automatic rifle. The memorial locally known as "Monumento das Heroinas" is built in a circular ground plan on Ho Chi Minh Street, nearby the Angolan Public Radio and Television stations headquarters, on the way to Independence Plaza.

Now at this monument, find the following:

4) The plaque on the front side of the monument ("Homenagem...") has a date (D/M/YY). Add up the numbers to one single number. This is D.

5) On the left and right side of the monument are the names of the heroes. Take a look at the second from the left. What's her LAST name (surname)? Take the consolidated number. This is E.

6) Now look at the dates of this heroic lady. She was assassinated in prison. How old was she? Add up the two numbers. This is F.

The cache

If at any question I ask you for the "consolidated number", then take the word value (A=1, B=2, C=3, etc.) and then add up ALL the numbers, until you have only ONE single number...
For example: "Neto"= 14+5+20+15 = 54 ---> 5+4 = 9. So the consolidated number in this case is 9...

If you did everything correct, you should now have all the information to get to the cache..... Go to:

S 08°49.(A+D)(F)(E)' and E 013°14.(C)(B+C)(B)'

GOOD LUCK!!! (BYOP!)

It is on a very busy street, with lots of pedestrian muggles!
Look around and pick the right time to go for the grab! Use STEALTH!!
