Geocache Description:

This multi is an introduction to Near Field Communication (NFC).  YOU WILL NEED A SMARTPHONE TO COMPLETE THIS CACHE!  DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS CACHE WITHOUT A SMARTPHONE!!!

NFC involves the use of "tags" that will transmit data to a Smartphone.  The data in this case will be the coordinates to the final.  You will need to download an app to utilize NFC.  There are many apps available for Android and Windows phones. Please see the Related Web Page for a list of NFC compatible phones.  NFC Tools is a common one for Android and is the app that I used.  You may use any app you wish.  Once you have the app installed and active, simply touch the back of your phone to the tag.  The tag is a small round disk (about the diameter of a bottlecap) that is attached to something at the posted coords.  Data will not transfer unless your phone is within an inch or two of the tag.  Once the data transfers, the coored will pop up on your screen.  Go to that location and find the cache.  That's it!

Total round trip is about a half mile, although there are plenty of other great caches to find. Cache is a two leg multi. Both legs are only a few feet off the trail. Please use stealth as there are many people using this trail. Bring your own pen!

I got the idea for a NFC multi by doing one in the Rochester area.  The tags used are very affordable (~$1 each) and anyone with a smartphone can play.  I have some ideas for other NFC caches but wanted to introduce WNY to the technology.

Apparently NFC does not work on Apple iphones. The technology is locked only for ApplePay. I have been told that NFC now works on newer iPhones. I am not sure what model iPhone you need or any specifics.

Congrats to theBrown7 on a well deserved FTF!

NOTE: AFTER YOU DOWNLOAD THE NFC APP, YOU HAVE TO TURN NFC ON IN YOUR PHONES NETWORK SETTINGS. IT WILL NOT WORK IF NFC IS NOT ENABLED.
