This is the remains of an old iron furnace that used to produce
"pig iron" back in the middle to late 1800's. These remains are in
very good condition.

This furnace is unique because it has twin stacks. All other
iron furnaces were "one stack" units. These twin stacks even had
their own names, "Blackstone" and "Chandler". When built, this
furnace was the largest in the world. It could burn up to an acre
of forest land per day to keep its twin furnaces fired. It was the
last furnace to be built in Estill County.
Getting to the right road is the hardest part of this cache. To
get to this furnace, take Highway 52 about 6 miles out of Ravenna.
Turn onto Cobhill Rd and turn left again immediately onto road
#975. Go about three miles and the furnace is located on the left.
Cobhill Rd is located at the bottom of a steep hill and is in a
sharp curve. That should help you.
To log this cache, e-mail me
(Click Here) the number of picnic tables in the area to
the left of the furnace. You can also post a picture of the furnace
with you and your gps to the log instead of e-mailing me, if you
prefer.
Any log that is posted without a picture or e-mailing me the
answer will be deleted.
Please do not post the answer in your log!
This would be a good cache to do with my
"Cottage Furnace" cache
