This cache is the first to be placed on Sandy Point. Sandy Point, formerly a peninsula, is now an island. It is an abandoned community, thought to be once inhabited by aboriginals, namely a Dorset culture and later the Beothuk and M'Kmaq nations. In 1949 the government started a program of voluntary and forced resettlement ( to St. George's ) by offering residents financial incentives. They declined with the last two residents leaving in the 1970's. Many unique flora and fauna are found on the island. There are still gravestones which are maintained by family members . Migratory birds such as the piping plover has been known to nest here. There is a lighthouse on the island. In recent years Nature Conservany Canada has taken ownership of part of the island and host yearly shoreline clean ups with volunteers. This year while volunteering I decided to place a cache. Sandy Point became known for a genetic defect called the Alderdice Syndrome ( linked to a couple from Cape Breton who settled there in the 1800's and named by the doctor who studied it.) You can go to this island by boat , my son and I once kayaked there on a beautiful sunny day and spent a whole day exploring the island. You can walk to island from Flat Bay but tides quickly change. Cache is medium sized and includes FTF .
