The scientific explanation for this phenomenon, although somewhat elaborate, it is relatively simple to explain. This phenomenon is based on four critical phases.
When we have the arrival of a wave from West - Northwest (1) The part of the wave that reaches the cannon of Nazareth, gains height and changes direction due to vertical gap. a)
At the moment (2) a sudden decrease of the depth originates reduce the waves grow in size and height. This process occurs gradually as the waves reach the shore.
At the moment (3) there is a positive influence and interference between the wave from the cannon and the wave traversing the northern continental shelf, i.e. at the point where the wave front under the "influence of the gun" and the wave front under the platform Continental intersect, it’s promoted growth of the wave, making it even larger.
Finally, the current along the beach which flows from north to south and bends in the cable to the sea (4), reinforced by the huge amount of water in the cove, catch the wave in the opposite direction to its spread and further contributing to the growth.
It is therefore the combined effect of all these processes that substantially increases the size of the waves that give the North Beach, reaching sometimes much lower than reported off the Portuguese coast values, especially when the ripples are prevalent Northwest or West. Thanks to this natural process, a wave of 10 meters can be easily amplified to double.
